The Crud

Y'all, I have the crud. I can't breathe through my nose right now. My throat hurts from breathing through my mouth so much. And I keep sneezing when the Kleenex are in the other room and I have no more with me. I feel horrible. I despise being sick!  And guess what? In the midst of this illness, God had a little message for me. It involved crud too. Oh joy!

Micah 6:8 has been following me around for the last couple of weeks, even in songs (see video below). Last night while I was drinking my tea, I decided to start at Micah 6:1 and read to 6:8. I just had to know the "whole story". I had to see what God was trying to show me in Micah 6:8. In chapter 6 The Lord begins to make his case against Israel. He asked the people what He had done to them. How had He burdened them? (v3) Then He asked them to remember all He had done for them. He wrapped up with asking how they thought they should worship and honor Him. it wasn't with burnt offerings, calves, rams, oil or a firstborn (v4-7). No, none of those thing would do. Why? Because they do not involve true engagement with God. They don't involve the heart. What really struck me in the New King James version was the way God kept saying "O my people". I could just feel His sorrow, His pleading with His people, with me.

So in verse 8, it says, "He has shown you, O man, what is good; And what does the Lord require of you but to do justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God?." As I read and re-read those eight verses, it struck me that I'm as ungrateful and forgetful as the Israelites. No matter how much God does for me, I always want more or something different. No matter how faithful and consistent, I worry about everything. It really settled in that the same crud the Israelites had in their heart, sits in mine as well.

Just like I'm fighting the crud invading my body right now, making me feel like one big congested nose, I'm fighting the crud in my heart. God clearly wants my devotion to Him, not just to what He does. I don't always give that. But I should. He deserves that and more.

It boils down to this. Even in our trials, those we cause and those that seem to simply befall us, we learn something about God and about ourselves. Whether we choose to act on that information determines the course of our life. I learned something and I plan to act on it. I want the course of my life determined by devotion, honor and obedience to God. How about you?

Be blessed,

Mari

Turn It Around Tuesday: It's Only Temporary

It's November. When I was living in Chicago that meant 40 or lower degrees and possibly snow. In North Carolina, where we live now, it's 76 degrees. A girl could get used to this. But. You knew that was coming didn't you? This Indian Summer is temporary. Thursday the high will be 55. Sigh!

A little while ago I wrote something that reminds me of how things are temporary. Warning: this is raw and unedited. Be gentle with me :)

Even though there are dark clouds above, notice that they are moving. They are not here to stay. There is hope of blue sky and sun to come. The wind has uprooted some trash cans and recycle bins, scattering their contents about. But this too is a temporary situation since a clean up crew or resident will return the trash to its rightful place. Even the bits of trash cannot take away from the beauty of new life seen all around. The trees are displaying their new buds in an array of colors, reminiscent of fall. Even those that are bare seem expectant, standing next to their budding counterparts. Though not perfect, what I see is still beautiful because it screams hope. The temporary blighted scene cannot detract from the hope of the beautiful scene that will soon emerge. I can hardly wait.

Hope. When things are going bad, remember they are only temporary. There is hope in a change. When you can't seem to get it right, remember it is only temporary. Situations and circumstances are temporary. They ebb and flow. They change. Temporary. Sometimes we like the change. Sometimes we don't. Either way, we know at some point, change is coming. That's hope life works.

But there is one thing we can count on to be permanent and full of hope. God.

"For I am the LORD, I do not change; Therefore you are not consumed, O sons of Jacob." (Malachi 3:6 NKJV)

"And we have known and believed the love that God has for us. God is love, and he who abides in love abides in God, and God in him." (1 John 4:16 NKJV)

"For His merciful kindness is great toward us, And the truth of the LORD endures forever" (Psalm 117:2 NKJV)

I could go on and on. But it all begins and ends with this fact. Life here on earth is full of the temporary. Our souls long for permanency. The only way to satisfy that longing is to fill it with the best. And the best is God. If you don't know Him, have a relationship with Him or seek Him daily, start today.

Blessings to you all,

Mari

Frank Friday - I'm Off Duty

If you had ever asked my daughters what my husband says when I ask him how he liked dinner, they'll tell you that he  always says "It was alright." That's it. No "it stank" or "it was good" or anything like that. He just says, "It was alright." Honestly, it offended me. So did I try to probe him to see how it could be better? Of course not. That would be the mature, logical thing to do. And I was never feeling that kind of way. In fact, I'll go even further than that. When he would offer constructive criticism, I got mad. I never listened so I could incorporate the things he was telling me. Oh no! Again, that would require maturity, logic and humility. And again, I was never feeling that kind of way. (Not that I'm proud of that. I'm not. I'm just being honest about my junk)

But then......

If you read this post, you'll know I'm committed to deepening my relationship with God. I just need more of His presence in my life. See the previous paragraph for an example of why that's true. There's a teeny, tiny catch to that commitment. Okay, maybe it's not so teeny or tiny. The more of God's presence I feel in my life, the more it changes me.  That transforming presence made me care more about my husband's meals. That's a big deal because my husband is picky. Very, very picky. When he says "I'm hard to cook for aren't I?" I don't bother to respond. It's a rhetorical question!

Despite that, I started to really take my time cooking everything instead of rushing through dinner just so I could say I was done. I started paying attention to those little details. You know, the ones he had tried to tell me about a million times. The ones I ignored a million and one times. But I wasn't doing that anymore. Then a funny thing happened. Well two funny things. One, I enjoyed cooking more. Maybe it's because I was doing it out of love instead of duty. Just maybe. The second thing, that is now a common occurrence, is that he complimented me. He said, "Are you cooking my meals with lots of love? I'm asking because this food is so very good." I almost passed out.

I figured it was a one time "slip up". But the next day he said "That was great. Thanks for cooking.  Do you want me to help with dishes?" Again, I thought the room might be spinning. It wasn't. It was just my head and heart realizing that I should have done this much sooner. I can't change the past, but I can sure keep the present in good shape.

I'm now evaluating other things that over time, I've started doing with only a sense of duty. I want to replace that with loving purpose. My family is not a duty. It's a privilege. And I plan on treating them that way in every area I possibly can. I wonder if they'll start thinking the room is spinning?

How about you? Is there something you've started doing just to check it off your list? Is there something that you could do from the love in your heart instead of out of duty? Go ahead, go off duty. I dare you.

Blessings to you all,

Mari

Turn It Around Tuesday - When The Rain Is Pouring

These last few weeks have been quite a ride. Unfortunately, I don't mean that in a fun, exhilarating way. First, my cousin had a stroke and now has paralysis on the right side of his body. Last week my uncle had a stroke. Yesterday my mom called to tell me that one of my cousins was killed. A bullet came through the window, striking and killing him. There are other smaller things that have occurred but nothing like the "big three". I almost cringe when the caller ID announces it's my mom, because I'm dreading more bad news.

This torrent of discouraging news could have shaken my faith. I could have gotten angry with God. I could have thrown up my hands and said, "That's it. I'm tired of this. I quit!" I've been tempted to do that a time or two or thirty in my life. But this time I wasn't there. That wasn't in me. (Right here is where we can give God a clap offering!) Are you wondering why it wasn't in me? Great, because I'm going to tell you why.

I've accepted a church-wide challenge from my pastor to "practice God's presence" at least five minutes every day. In other words, sit in stillness and quiet for at least five minutes thinking on, waiting for and anticipating God's presence and hopefully at some of these sessions, a message from God. This isn't a new concept for me. The problem is that I've never consistently done it. But now I am determined. Why now? Now, because I am desperate to grow closer to God. Now, because it's just time to further solidify my relationship with Jesus.

I read something recently by C.S.Lewis that said we need to become dyed and not painted. I'm afraid all these years I've been painted. Paint fades, chips and peels. That's how I've felt recently. Temporary is no longer good enough. I want permanency. So I'm ready for my dye job. Ever dyed your hair? The dye has to sit for a good little while to actually "take". So I'm going to sit each day for God's presence to "take" in my life. I'm excited about that.

So when that rain came pouring down in the form of bad news after bad news, issue after issue, there was God. In my time of quiet and even throughout my busy days, He spoke two things to me.

  1. I'm still in control. You might not understand what I'm doing. And I know that frustrates you. But trust me. I've always been in control. I'm in control now. I'll be in control in the future. That's never going to change. Let me be me and you simply trust me. I'll never fail you. Never.
  2. Your days were numbered before you were born. I know the day I will call you home heaven. You don't know if that day will come now or ten years from now. Consider each day a gift from me. Unwrap it and choose how you will use it.
Psalm 90:12 says, "So teach us to number our days, That we may gain a heart of wisdom."  That is my prayer each day now. Instead of turning my thoughts to worry and anger over problems, issues, situations and circumstances, I now chose to turn my thoughts to God and how what He's doing can teach my something. Yes, even the things I don't like. Even the things that hurt. Especially the things I don't understand. I'm not perfect with it yet. Never will be. But I choose to keep practicing His presence and His way of life for me. Will you join me? I promise it will change your life in the most marvelous way!

Blessings to you all,

Mari

My Tune Tuesday 2/22/11

My ministry verse is Isaiah 61:1-3. These verses have been around in my life for years. In all teh struggles, hardships and victories in my life, they've kept me going. When I write, these are the verses that guide me. There is a song that is taken right from these verses. I'd like to share it as my tune for you this Tuesday. Enjoy!

Almighty Amazon versus Almighty God

My publisher no longer lists our books on Amazon. Since the company has taken the direction as a direct sales company whose primary product is books, it makes business sense to allow the Diva Sales Representatives the opportunity to sell the books. As such, Amazon is out as a sales outlet. There may be other reasons for the decision, but that's the most important one.

When I first heard this news, I was a bit disheartened. Amazon is HUGE! Everyone lists their books on Amazon. Everyone buys their books from Amazon. In fact, I told someone I know about it and they had quite a response. They told me that I was never going to sell any of my books if they weren't listed on Amazon. Wow! That didn't make me feel good a week before my book launch party. I told one of my best friends and she, as usual, gave words of wisdom. What did she say?

"Mari, you should have told him that his God is pretty small. Your God is bigger than Amazon. "

Well amen! My God is certainly not small. And He is certainly bigger than Amazon. How do I know this?

Only God could have connected me, months earlier, to the two people who hosted me on their blogs. Amazon had no power to do that.

Only God could have connected me to the woman who started a business support group for Christian women. Even though it's based in Chicago, she expanded the group's support and services to women outside of her area. I was fortunate enough to be selected to join. She has provided such encouragement and insight. Amazon had no power to do that.

Only God could have placed it on this same woman's heart to interview me for her new Internet radio show. Amazon had no power to do that.

Only God could have also placed another woman in Raleigh that was joined this same group. She had a product launch in Chicago. because we were connected through this group, I was able to participate in her swag bag and connect with 80 potential readers. Amazon had no power to do that.

Only God could have connected my brother to a woman who is involved in a ministry that was holding an event during the time my book was launching. Only He could have orchestrated an opportunity for me to be  a sponsor of the event. Amazon had no power to do that.

Only God could have orchestrated circumstances such that I would call into an Internet radio show as a listener and wind up being able to talk about my book and my publisher for 20 minutes. 20 minutes. Think Amazon had the power to do that? Nope.

Time and time again I have seen God market this book in ways that neither Amazon nor I could ever put together.

You can have almighty Amazon. I'll take Almighty God every day!

Not What I Asked For

My little family is having a rough time. There are issues going on all over the place. Yesterday I hit a breaking point. I did my best to hold it together at work. I did take my lunch to leave the building, park in my favorite spot and read some scripture prayer cards. The Word always soothes me. Well, except yesterday.

Yesterday God gave me a gift. Yep. He surely did. I was praying, okay, whining about everything that was going on. I tried to stop the whiny train by praying through my Beth Moore Praying God's Word scripture cards. I read the first card and nodded in agreement. I read another and again nodded in agreement. Then I hit the third card in the stack. It was the one for 2 Corinthians 12:9. Ever read that scripture?

But he said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness." Therefore I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ's power may rest on me.

Yeah. Not quite what I wanted to hear. So I said aloud "Ooooohkay Lord. I was kind of hoping for something a bit more encouraging." I moved on to the next card. Surely it would be a bit more hopeful. Nope. Another "gut punch". It was the card for 2 Corinthians 4:17-18. Let me share those verses with you.

For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

I don't know about you but that does not elicit the warm, fuzzy soothing feeling I was looking for. it felt more like "Suck it up girl! This is good training!" Um, yeah, but I really did not want to hear that right then. I wanted comfort. Apparently, it wasn't going to happen.

The final "whack"? The next card of course. Ready??

Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance... Romans 5:3

Well then.

Wow! I sat there and thought about what had just happened. Wow!

And then I laughed. That's just like God. When we are seeking what we think we need, He gives us what we really need. I was seeking comfort. He provided direction. That was His gift to me; divine direction. It was a gut check. Quit focusing on the circumstances and focus on the One who could either change or get you through them.

That's a lot harder to do when you're in the midst of a bunch of messes and raging fires. But do it I must. After all, God was pretty clear. Besides, I don't think my gut can handle anymore "attention".

And yes, I still love God, even if sometimes He gives me exactly the opposite of what I ask for :) In fact I love Him because He's willing to smile at my request and do the God thing instead. Sometimes I need that. Even when I'd prefer something else. Keeps me humble and teachable.

Has God ever given you the opposite of what you felt you really needed? Feel free to share!

As always, be blessed!!

Rain

It is raining today. This is not just regular rain. This is Hurricane Ida dumping on us rain. Think buckets. Think Goliath sized buckets of rain. And it's getting cold. I've got one word for this - YUCK!

And although I don't love this weather, it's necessary. The reservoirs need to be replenished. Plants and animals need this water. It's life giving. It may not be great for people with plans to spend time outdoors or those with chronic conditions that react to this type of weather, but it is necessary.

Spiritual rain is needed as well. Sometimes we need that difficulty to wash something away or for cleansing. Those tears may water seeds we are unaware of, planted by God's hand and plan for us. We may not love the rain. Most often we don't. That's normal. We can, however, change our perspective. Instead of focusing on what we do not like about the rain or how we think it is ruining our plans, focus on God.

Imagine Him catching our tears with the hands with a concerned and loving expression on His face. Watch Him carry those tears to a now tiny patch of fresh dirt. He pours out your tears and a tiny sprout appears. Ah! New life. He loving turns His gaze toward you. You can't see Him or that new life because you are blinded by your tears, by the rain causing the tears. But He sees you and smiles, knowing one day soon the rain will cease. The tears will cease. You will open your eyes, lift up your head and be surprised at what has grown because of all this water you now hate. But until that day, He continues to catch your tears, water and offer His peace and love as a comfort to you. He waits patiently for the day of your realization. It causes Him to smile and it brings a ray of sunshine to you. A pause in your watery existence. You briefly wonder where it came from but are quickly distracted by the rain starting again. God smiles and gently says, "One day soon child you will see and know that I am God and I love you."

Watch for your rays of sunshine. Wait for that day of realization when you will see and know that He is God. In the meantime, embrace the rain, cry your tears and know that He's with you always.

“The Spirit of the Lord GOD is upon Me, Because the LORD has anointed Me
To preach good tidings to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives, And the opening of the prison to those who are bound;
To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD, And the day of vengeance of our God;
To comfort all who mourn,To console those who mourn in Zion,
To give them beauty for ashes,The oil of joy for mourning,
The garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness;
That they may be called trees of righteousness,
The planting of the LORD, that He may be glorified.”
Isiah 61:1-3 (NKJV)

Filling Up The Gas Tank

I'm on vacation from work this week. O HAPPY WEEK!!!! Yes it was time for a vacation. Everything and almost everyone was getting on my nerves. So, I'm home relaxing this week.

Let's see how relaxing this week. I'm doing laundry and running the oldest beauty to choir practice because she has a concert this week that I'll attend. I'm participating in the Muse Online Writers Conference while also trying to get some work done on one of my two works in progress (this one is an eight lesson bible study). Oh, did I mention my youngest beauty is still on break from school and so I'm spending some time with her when she's not texting or playing Toontown. Oh yeah, I'm also trying to beat my oldest beauty's score in Cafe World on Facebook. Hey, we're competitive like that. Makes for a strong mother-daughter bond.

Yep, I'm relaxing all right :)

But even with all that activity, I do feel relaxed. Why? Because I'm doing things I like, things I'm passionate about. Except the laundry. I am NOT passionate about laundry. Ever. Laundry aside, it is much more enjoyable to participate in activities you feel strongly about. Positive things create positive feelings and relieves stress.

I think that's why I love reading my Bible. There's so much hope there, so many places to go for encouragement, inspiration and instruction. I'll be spending a lot of time in my Bible this week. I know...one more thing on my "relaxing" schedule. It's much needed though. I need to fill up my spiritual gas tank before I return to Babylon, I mean work :)

How about you? Where is your spiritual gas tank this week? Full? Half Full? Running on empty? Fill up today. All it costs is a little time.

As always, be blessed!!

A challenge

It's been two weeks since I posted last. That's because the laptop we had been using to replace our computer that got struck by lightening had a hard drive failure. So....we are sans computer at the moment.

Well, that's not entirely true. We have one that no longer remembers it's IP address so we can't connect to the Internet with it. When our lives settle down a bit (yeah right!!) I'll see if a NIC card will fix it. If not, then we have to pray God supplies money for a new one.

In the meantime, let me throw out a challenge to you. I've been studying the term "mercy seat" since I attended the Beth Moore simulcast. Travis sang a song where the mercy seat was referenced. I've been enthralled ever since. So...your challenge...tell me if you know what the mercy seat is :)

Ready, set, go.......................

Be blessed!!

Work Needed

My writers critique group was tonight. This was my month to present. I decided that I wanted them to critique two of the devotions I plan to use in my next devotional book. I felt the concept for it was good because, well, God gave it to me! And just like the book that is currently being edited by my publisher, it was one I wasn't sure I wanted to write. But the Holy Spirit is **SO** persistent! Anywho.....

So I put my work in the hands of these wonderful ladies and prepared to listen to their comments and suggestions. And boy there were a lot of them! They confirmed that the concept is brilliant. Can we get a little clap praise for the Lord? He's never wrong by the way :)

But then came.....the places where it needed work. Whoa Nelly! It needs work! Now don't get me wrong. I did not come away feeling like the work was crappy. I came away with some wonderful ideas for how to improve and enhance it. I came away with ideas that will make it marketable to more women than I originally thought. I was already passionate about it, but now, NOW I am ready to get rocking, rolling and writing. My heart is on fire anew for this work. And I can't wait for y'all to read it! And you will, as soon as I finish writing it and selling it ;)

So let me throw this little bit out to you. This was only possible because I was willing to be teachable. I was willing to accept some criticism. I was open to suggestion. Being closed to pride was my goal. Because of this attitude, the book will be better. In fact, I believe the book will be great!

We need to be that way with God because, frankly, we could all wear a "work needed" sign. Sometimes He's telling us we need to change. Or we need to do something. Or stop doing something. We need to be teachable and open to a little "holy criticism". We need to listen to the voice of the Holy Spirit whispering to us. We need to be closed to pride. And because of that attitude, we will be better. We will be blessed.

Get blessed today!

The Pressure's On

Wow! Micca Campbell is fabulous. I am blogging tonight about her book An Untroubled Heart, which we are reading for our Yes to God Bible Study. This week's chapter is just as awesome as last weeks. So, let's dig in!

***All text in blue is a direct quote from the book***

Micca said: "One of our greatest fears is that someone will discover the truth: We can't really juggle it all." I used to have this problem but I've been freed from it. I no longer care if people know I can't juggle it all. You know why? Neither can they! HA! There I said it. LOL No one can do it all, juggle it all, be great at it all, etc.

Next she gives us the names of God's bodyguards for us, Goodness and Mercy. You can find an introduction to them in Psalm 23. Go on. Read it. I'll wait.

Did you read it? Okay. Let's continue. "We often mislabel Goodness and Mercy. We call them luck or coincidence." I have to raise my hand here in confession. I have said "Oh I got lucky" or said something happened "coincidentally". I am learning not to steal God's glory that way. Because in the end, that's what we are doing. As Micca tells us, "You and I must believe that every benefit that comes our way is God's Goodness and Mercy following after us." AMEN!

Micca discussed contentment. My pastor just taught on this a few weeks ago. I needed to be reminded again. Micca tells us that, "Balance comes when I lay my to-do list before God and allow Him to prioritize my life." Do I do that? Most often, I do not. But now I will. This ought to be exciting!

One other thing she pointed out was that "In wanting more, we place undue pressures on ourselves in an attempt to get what God hasn't provided." Like a house or a nicer, newer car. So Mari, when and if God is ready, He'll provide. Either way, be content with what you have. What He's blessed you with is already more than you deserve.

The other thing that really spoke to me was when Micca said "...peace isn't the absence of pressure. It's the presence of God and our attitude toward His provision in the midst of our stress." I'd like to end with that. Just ponder that. It is a powerful statement that can really change your life. Think on it. That's what I'll be doing over the next week.

As always, be blessed everyone! And please be sure to stop by and visit Lelia who is hosting this wonderful study.

An Untroubled Heart - Fashioned For Faith - Not Fear

Hi Everyone,

I know I missed posting for Yes to God Tuesday last week but I'm back this week. My fibromyalgia is in what I call a mini-flare so I'm operating under about 50% capacity. I didn't want to miss another week though of this wonderful study with Lelia. We are reading and studying Micca Campbell's An Untroubled Heart. Good stuff I tell you!

Well this week, I'm posting a bit differently. I'm in a reflective mood so I want you to come along for that journey. What I'm going to do is draw out the statements in each sub chapter that impacted me most and let you "chew on them" a bit. I've inserted a little commentary on some of the statements, cause I know you want to know what's going in my head. (teehee) And you get to imagine how my copy is highlighted in bright yellow! I know that's been your life dream HAHAHA. Leave me a comment if one touches you particularly.

**All the blue items are direct quotes from the book**

Under God's Sheltering Wing

"There is safety in God. "

"Safety is not found in doing nothing or living in a bubble. It's found under the sheltering wings of God."

"Just as it makes sense to shelter ourselves from the rain, it makes even more sense for us to take cover under the sheltering wings of God during life's storms. "

Micca referred to Psalm 91 in this section. How I love that Psalm. You must read it because it sums up these quotes so well! God always has a vacancy sign for us at His shelter!

Casting Your Cares

"We are to throw the cares that distract us, wound our bodies and souls, and lie heavily on our hearts upon the wise and gracious providence of God. You can do that because "he cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7).

"It's easy to cast my cares upon God. The hard part is not taking them back."
Mari says: Oh goodness I need a big huge AMEN here!! I'm way too good at the taking them back.

"At first, the weight is lifted, but oftentimes God doesn't respond to our need as we think He should. Then we are quick to retrieve the burden."
Mari says: Ahem, I resemble this statement far, far too often.

"In other words, what won't destroy us, God uses to better us."
Mari says: Like allowing my husband to be unemployed or underemployed for nearly three years to solidify our marriage and draw us deep into fellowship at our new church home in Raleigh.

"...it's God's job to provide and it's my job to seek the Provider"

Who's In Control

"One of the hardest things to do is to give up control of our lives and trust someone other than ourselves.Placing the very thing that worries us most in God's hands is scary"
Mari says: Yes it is. Even though I know God is good and He really does love me and want what's best for me, I struggle with my flesh. I want it to turn out how *I* imagined it, thank you very much. And God usually has a whole different idea in mind. Hmph!

He's Got The Whole World In His Hands

"He poured the oceans from the palm of His hand!"
Mari says: Just think of the size of every ocean! And they fit in His palm!! WOW!!!

"Certainly, we can place our trust in a God so big that even the ocean waves obey their boundaries"

"I need to remind myself daily of His greatness. In doing so, all my fears tend to fade in the light of His presence."
Mari says: Really, doesn't the greatness of His presence just eclipse any fear you have? It does mine!

Genuine Faith
(A lot of wisdom packed into this tiny sub chapter)

"Faith is only as good as its object"

"It's not faith that moves mountains, anyway; it's God."
Mari says: I almost jumped out of my chair to shout at this one! Whew!

"Faith is not a principle of 'name it and claim it'. It's based on the person of Jesus Christ."
Mari says: I have often had discussions with my elder relatives about "name it and claim it". I claim Jesus. He handles all else. "Nuf said!

"Faith comes by knowing God."

"Genuine faith is not what you and I profess to believe, but in whom we believe."
Mari says: This reminds me of the "Got Milk" ads. I'd love to see one that says, 'Got Jesus? Got faith!'

Live Like You Believe
(I could have highlighted 90% of this sub chapter! Whew! i picked my "top statements" but please read this sub chapter with some intensity. It's that good!)

"The Bible is the best place to go to get to know God."
Mari says: I love the Word. I cannot even begin to explain the depths of it, but I **LOVE** the Word. God is in the Word. God breathed the Word. God is the Word. Need I say more?

"Satan is a liar"
Mari says: In case he told you he wasn't....he lied! That is all.

"Faith is standing on the firm foundation of Christ."
Mari says: And yes, He is "all that"!

"When Satan tries to pull concerns down over your eyes of faith, simply declare God's sufficiency and watch Satan's fear tactics go up in smoke."
Mari says: Did we mention that Satan is a liar? Yeah. Don't listen to him. Hear God and tell Satan to scatter!

"Worry is unnecessary when Our God is able and willing to bear our burdens for us. When you and I worry, we denying the wisdom, love and provision of God."
Mari says: Well Micca just stab me in the heart. I'm Mari and I am a worrier. I am in recovery. Thank you Micca for giving me what I need to know that I must not worry. I never want to deny God's power in my life or anyone else's.

Living Aware of His Presence

"...we are to be haunted not by the concerns of this world, but by God. Not in a scary way, but in a conscious way."

"I want to become so aware of God's abiding presence in my life that I fall asleep in His arms at night and awake to His presence in the morning."
Mari says: Me too Micca. Me too!

"Our fears and worries should drive us into the safety of God's arms"

"In God's loving care, our spirit is renewed, and we know for certain there is no safer place on earth."

"In every pressured situation, we can be certain that God will remain true."

And Mari says Amen!

If you do not have this book, get it. Really. Get it.

As always, be blessed and be sure to stop by Lelia's, our insightful bible study leader!

When the Unthinkable Happens

I am ever so happy to be participating once again in Lelia's Yes to God Tuesday Bible Study. I missed the last one and I feel like I am going home now :) We are reading "An Untroubled Heart" by Micca Campbell of Proverbs 31 Ministries. Let's begin shall we?

***Anything in blue is a quote from the book***

First, let me tell you that it took me quite a while to get through this chapter. Not because it was bad, but because I was crying so hard I couldn't see! Micca relates the story of her first husband, Porter. As Micca describes him, "He was such a looker that my friends had only one word to describe him - "Mercy!" WOW! Micca described their courtship and early marriage. And then.....

Micca tells us how Porter was burned in an explosion. I got to the part where she was in the room after his surgery, looking at him on life support. She asked the nurse a question that brought back some strong and painful memories for me. Micca asked, "If you were to turn off my husband's machine, he wouldn't breathe on his own ever again - would he?"
The nurse answered that he would not. So the family turned off the life support and Porter went to be with the Lord.

It reminded me of my dad. He had a rare lung disease. By the time we found out about it, it was too far along. We didn't get his diagnosis until after his lung biopsy. They had put him under sedation to allow his lungs to heal. But when they removed the sedation several days later, he didn't become responsive. They did some tests and reported that he was brain dead. As a family, we made the difficult decision to remove his life support. I was there with my mom as he passed from this life to eternity. And I know he went to meet my sweet Jesus because we had talked about his salvation just before his lung biopsy.

As I read Micca's account, it brought all those memories rushing back and I cried as if it had just happened. Tears are flowing as I write this now. When my dad died, I felt like my life was over. At that time, my marriage was not in a good state. My dad filled in the gaps where my husband was being deficient.

There were a lot of gaps. Micca said "In my mind's eye, I burst through the door to the throne room of grace, shook my fist in the face of God, and boldly questioned, "WHY - why did You do this to me? You could have saved him! You're God!" Oh Micca, I know girl. I said the same thing. "Why did you leave me God with two kids whose father is only physically present. I need help and You, God, just let him die!"

Micca said she turned to Psalm 139 and through it God spoke to her and told her "You are not alone. I am here." And He is. He's always there for us. "My first step in learning to trust God again came when I chose to believe that I am never ever alone. God is always with me." AMEN! I realized this to be true when I saw God change my husband. Were it not for God being with me, I would probably not be married today. But I am glad I trusted God - He is always present and always right!

In the Bible Study portion, Micca makes a very powerful statement that I totally resemble. She says "I desire to be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing. I just don't want to have to go through a trial to get there." Yep, I resemble that 100%. Hmm..make that 200%

Yeah, then she throws me a curve ball. Stinker :) She says "However, these are the ways of God. When you and I look to the end result of what our testing is accomplishing, then we can find joy in the midst of it." Micca you are a wise woman! I just hope I can remember this during my next testing.

I cannot wait to see what Micca has in store for us next week. Hopefully I won;t be blubbering the whole chapter like this time! Please stop by Lelia's blog and visit the other blogs participating in the study. See ya next week and until then.....Be blessed!!

This Broken Vessel Restored Book Blog Tour

Devotional Reflections from the Bible
with Paulette Harper

Women Who Praise

“When Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites looked up, and behold, the Egyptians were marching after them; and the Israelites were exceedingly frightened and cried out to the Lord.”

“Moses told the people, Fear not; stand still (firm, confident, undismayed) and see the salvation of the Lord which He will work for you today. For the Egyptians you have seen today you shall never see again. The Lord will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace and remain at rest.” Exodus 14: 10-14 AMP

“Then Miriam the prophetess, the sister of Aaron, took a timbrel in her hand, and all the women went out after her with timbrels and dancing. And Miriam responded to them, Sing to the Lord, for He has triumphed gloriously and is highly exalted; the horse and his rider He has thrown into the sea.” Exodus 15:20-21 AMP

In this story we read that the Egyptians were in hot pursuit of the children of Israel. They wanted nothing less but to kill them off, man, woman boy and girl. But regardless of the desire of Pharaoh and his army God had a great plan of deliverance. There is nothing more fearful than to be pursued by those who hate you, want to harm you and those that want to kill you. But what about all those bills that keep coming, that mortgage you can’t seem to pay because you just got your lay off slip, the kids wanting and needing new shoes or clothes, oh yeah did I fell to mention the car that needs a tune up! And these things are happening all at once.

Overwhelmed, stressed and felling of anxiety. Don’t worry, God has everything under control.

You might think I don’t know what I talking about, but I do. Not long ago I went through one of the most devastating times in my life. The pharaoh that was pursuing me was called divorce. I have learned as a child of God the purpose and power of praise. Sometimes we can be more focused on our problems we forget the person that has the ability to bring deliverance to us. God tells the children of Israel not to be fearful but be firm, confident and undismayed, why because God was about to show Himself big, mighty and strong on their behalf.

While facing the enemy divorce and using my tools of warfare, God delivered me in ways that were beyond my imagination. I stand today rejoicing in the God of my salvation because He fought my battles and I’m living a great life full of rest and peace.

Devote this day, regardless of what is pursuing you, to give God praise. You will see your enemies defeated this day right before your eyes. God will triumph gloriously.

The Truth Heals

Well it's our last chapter of Lisa Whittle's book Behind Those Eyes. This has been a fabulous and life-changing book. I am sad to send it end. Lisa did a wonderful job with this book, allowing God to use her to get after us about "the hard stuff". Thank you Lisa for your obedience!

I know this post is really late, but that's what happens when your Internet connection goes bye-bye for no apparent reason. So without further ado, let's wrap up. Remember all items in orange are direct quotes from Lisa.

"The truth is, in one way or another, we all show people the "us" we want them to see." You know, like when you are yelling at your kids and the phone rings. You don't answer it and growl "Hello" in to the receiver. Oh no. You put on your sweetest, most syrupy voice so you appear calm, cool and collected. Or how about when you and your husband had a disagreement on the way to the small group get- together and when you arrive, you act like he's the love of your life. You want to strangle his neck, but no one will ever know that if they are waiting for you to reveal it to them. These are just small examples but you get my drift. We all do it.

But aren't we supposed to be trying to be more authentic and real to people? That's my goal. Is it yours? If so then we need to embrace and live out the truth. What is the truth? Well Lisa laid it out very plainly for us.

Truth #1: Recognition

God created you exactly the way you are, with your unique personality and temperament, since He is incapable of making a mistake.

So that means He meant to give you that curly hair, freckles, wide hips, or crooked teeth. He knew exactly what He was doing when He made you impatient, shy, outspoken, compassionate, math savvy or forgetful. Quit being stressed out, angry or sad about it. He absolutely, unequivocally right "on the money" with how He made you.

Honey, if He made you exactly the way you wanted to be, would you depend on Him for anything? Would you want His presence the way you do now? I bet not. You'd be too busy admiring how great you were. Personally, I'd rather have more of God and less of Mari. Really.

Truth #2: Admission

God created you with a free will to choose your behavior and mess up your life.

Yeah and we do such an excellent job of messing up our lives. From time to time I wax nostalgic. I try not to do it often because there is a lot I'd like to forget. Stupid decisions, silly mistakes. I am still living with the consequences of a few of those. Lisa tells us that "God is quick not only to forgive us; He is quick also to restore us." And thank Him for that. I've been restored so many times. I am so grateful for that part of who God is to me, to us.

What's even better, He not only restores us but "God often uses broken people - the people with the most baggage - for His honor and glory." Think about it. Who better to help you in your situation than someone who has walked through it, been forgiven and restored and is now available to you by God's grace and design. Don't tell me God doesn't know what He is doing. He surely does.

Truth #3: Resolution

God created us to discern and discover who we are and where we function most effectively, without trying to be someone else.

Can I be honest? I no longer care to use my precious energy to attempt impersonation. It's enough work just being me. Add in trying to be someone else and you might as well just lay me out on the sofa for the rest of my life. Since God made me the way I am, I think I'll just let Him decide what to change and when to change it. If he chooses not to, then I need to spend my energy saying "Lord help me accept your decision." That's a much better use of time because it draws me closer to Him.

When it's all said and done, here is what is left. I am, you are, we are "completely flawed yet forgiven completely; an awesome spirit being, truly loved and accepted by God."

Go forth ladies and be YOU. And be blessed by the the Truth, Jesus the Christ.

****Stop by Lelia's for more insight on this closing chapter. You'll be able to check out the next study that begins January 6, 2009.*****

Completely Flawed Yet Forgiven Completely

Wow - what a title. What a concept! I'm talking about Lisa Whittle's book Behind Those Eyes that we've been studying for several weeks. All bold orange text are direct quotes from Lisa.

Lisa states "It's an absolute truth that we women, as people and as followers of Christ, are completely flawed and yet completely forgiven." Completely flawed. Yes that would be me. Completely forgiven. Praise God, that's me too. At the same time.

One year, the leader of a bible study I was in, made keepsake books for us. Each member had to write something positive about each of the other ladies in the group. She then had someone write these comments and verses in a wonderful scrapbook for us. As I read through the comments on each page, all I could think was, "Wow, is this what they see?" I was blown away. Much of what was written was probably really true. But much of what was not written was also true.

What things? Things like I've been in the pit. Many times. I've been in deep ones, shallow ones and wide ones. Heck, I've even dug the pit and leapt in with both feet and with eyes W I D E open.

I'm not perfect. No one is - except Jesus. It's good to know the good things about yourself. But it's also good to be aware of those rooms that we either need to unlock so Jesus can get in and make assessment of how much redecorating is needed or ones where we need to ask Him to please do some spring cleaning.

I don't mind being flawed. I mean I hate it in its truest sense because it's sin. However I don't mind it because it keeps me on my knees, pressed in to my LORD. Lisa expressed it so well when she said "For if there were no flaw, there would be no reason for forgiveness. And then we wouldn't get to see the awesome power of God miraculously at work in our lives." I'll just add a big AMEN!

Ladies, despite the sin I've been in, the pits I've sat in, the mud and muck I've been mired in, I'm forgiven. And guess what? You are too! Beth Moore often says no one has been in a bigger pit of sin. I often say "Ah sweet Beth, I'm just not so sure. I've lived me for 43 years. I'm not sure you can claim that one." Not that it's worth claiming anyway, other than to let people realize that God can forgive anything. Anything? Yes.

I'm reminded of the commercial where the lady is with her friends and they are admiring some decorating she's done. They're looking at the "do-it-yourself" book asking her if she did that. And she responds I did that, with this (referring to book). And then the conversation goes some thing like this.

"What about that?

" Yes that"

"And that?"

"That."

"Even that?"

"Even that!"

I imagine us asking Jesus if He can forgive that thing we did. And He says, "Yes I can forgive that."

"Well Lord, what about that? Surely you can't forgive me for that."

"Yes, I can forgive that too."

"And that ?" (referring Him to yet another major transgression)

"That too"

Saving the biggest, doosiest (yes I made that word up just now) sin for last, we think we've found something He can't forgive. So we gingerly point it out. And we whisper, "Lord, even that?"

Triumphantly, He holds out His nail ridden hands and bows His head towards His nail ridden feet and He boldly professes, "Even that!"

"Jesus Christ loves and forgives you without conditions. Period."

He forgives it all. Even that.

"While Satan would love for you to believe that you are to flawed and too unworthy of forgiveness, Jesus wants you to know that nothing could be farther from the truth."
Again I say, AMEN.

I leave you tonight with a song. I thought of it as soon as I saw the verse, Psalm 103:12. I knew I would include a video of it. Imagine my delight, seeing it referenced by Lisa in the study questions.

Listen and know that, yes, you are completely flawed. But moreover, you are forgiven completely.

Be sure to stop by Lelia's and read more insight on this chapter. You will surely be blessed, as is my prayer for you always.

"As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us" Psalm 103:12

Completely Loved and Accepted Completely

I missed posting last week. I'm going to post on Lisa Whittle's book, Behind Those Eyes, this week but in a truly different way. (As usual bold orange text are direct quotes from Lisa)

I find posting hard to do this week. Besides my fibromyalgia, two deaths in my family and something that happened tonight that broke my heart, I have something else that is heavy on my heart. So in this post I speak my heart so that I can let God heal it when I'm done. And then I'll move on, with some of you and, I'm sad to say, probably without some of you. Either way, God will still completely love me and accept me completely.

All over blogland and TV and radio, I hear people speaking of fear and how America made a bad choice on November 4, 2008. Many are Christians.

I don't even pretend to know if we made the right choice or not. I'm not God and frankly neither is anyone else. I know there are some real and true and strong Christians that were not dismayed by the choice that was made. And they, we, are being made to feel like we are not true Christians because of our choice.

But I can say that even though I feel condemned by my fellow Christians for my choice, I know God still loves me. Because as Lisa said, "Someone who would go to the trouble of counting the number of hairs on your head (Matt 10:30) loves you entirely and accepts you completely, with sheer abandon." That's enough for me - every day - even today.

Lisa also said: "Whether we desire Him or not, we are irresistibly desired by God." That's great news to me today. I need to know that He desires me. And He still desires for me to spend time with Him, so He can remind me He is in control. And since we really don't know His plan I can say, "Ah sovereign Lord, I trust you, even in this time of division and strife. I trust you even as I trusted you during the past eight years when I thought a wrong choice had been made on a November 4th. "

So tonight as the sadness over all that is going on in my own life here in Raleigh and in this world envelopes me, I cling to a verse Lisa listed:

"The LORD your God is with you, He is mighty to save. He will take great delights in you, He will quiet you with His love" Zephaniah 3:17

I encourage you to stop by Lelia's blog for very different perspectives on this week's study. Mine is just that, mine. There are many ways to process this material and I think it is imperative that you look into what other's got out of this chapter.

Now, I am going to go spend some time with the "amazing heavenly Dad I have."

As Always, be blessed.

Ms. Spirtuality

Another bible study week people! Today we are dissecting, umm, I mean discussing Ms. Spirituality from Behind Those Eyes, Lisa Whittle's book. Orange items are direct quotes from Lisa's book.

Ms. Spirituality. She could make you think yourself a slacker. Really, she could. Here are her "merit badges of honor" when she's really "dressed to impress" (combined lists from pg 78)

  • Attends church, Sunday school and mid week services and leads at least one ministry

  • Volunteers for nonprofits, Christian organizations and starts up a Christian organization

  • Knows proper "Christianese" and uses it frequently in her journals, blogs and her own devotionals (authored by her of course)

  • Collects money from others and gives away her own money to the less fortunate

  • Listens to Christian music and Christian radio and watches only Chrsitian TV . **On a normal week that is. On a dressed to impress week the list reads like this**: Has no cable or XM radio..and if she's really spiritual, she has no TV!

  • Often wears a Christian pin or T-shirt and has a Christian bumper sticker oe=r emblem on her car and has a personalized Christian license plate

  • Attends more than two women's conferenes a year, or coordinates at least one

  • Prays for missionaries faithfully and goes on overseas mission trips each year.

Anyone have a pillow and blanket. I need a nap. I'm worn out just reading this list. Whew!

Lisa point sout that "Ms. Spirituality doesn't pick and choose, but rather does all of them. And most of the time, she does all these things well." One word in a critical phrase struck me. Most of the time. I pondered that word most. That meant sometimes she did not do them well. She was probably overworked, stretched too thin, worn out. You know what? That's not what God requires of us. He's not looking for performance. Does He want us to do good deeds? Yes. Does He want us to serve the Body? Yes. Does He want us to use our giftedness? YES.

It reminds me of Mary and Martha (Luke 10:38-41). Mari, I mean Martha would be Ms. Spirituality. She was there running around cleaning, cooking, decorating, passing judgement. Yep, I said it. She passed judgement on her sister Mary. "I'm doing all this very important stuff and what is she doing, nothing. "

Jesus' response to Martha is the same response He has for us today. "...only one thing is needed." What??!! One thing? ONE thing? But don't you see my list LORD, how much I do for you and your kingdom. I mean surely You can't mean ONE thing. (Oh yeah, that's me talking to God this time last year.)

What's the one thing? Relationship/fellowship with Him. Lisa states: "He is seeking today what He has always been interested in getting from us: a relationship with Him that is pure of heart and motive, the only goal in mind being to honor Him by doing His will."

In Ms. Spirituality's list above, where is the "sit down and pour out your heart to God"? Where is the "read the Word just because and let it settle in your heart and mind afresh"? Where is the "be still and know that He is God"? Where is the" I will listen for Your still small voice LORD speaking directly to me"? Where are those things?

I submit to you that they are not there. There is no time for that. You're too busy at the next performance to make the practice session for what He really wants you to do. I know. I was Ms. Spirituality. But God....

Knocked me on my behind and said "Listen! I want you to want me, not the approval and admiration of others. When I call you to do something, it won't go off well. It will be spectacular because I'll be in charge. In the mean time, know ME, love ME, seek approval from ME. I promise you will never regret it." It was the hardest lecture I ever listened to. Why? Because I had been misguided and left my first love, Jesus, for the love of performance, adulation and admiration. I was ashamed and repentant.

I gave up a lot of good things to be obedient to my God. And you know what, He has, as always, kept His promise. I don't regret it. Do I long for it sometimes? Sure, Ms. Spirituality tries to rear her head from time to time. She does make a cameo here and there. But I'm learning to tell her that all God wants is me.

Before you head over to Lelia our wonderful bible study leader's blog and join in with the other ladies participating in this study, let me leave you with one last thought. Lisa introduced us to a real spiritual woman, the woman with the blood problem (Luke 8:42-28). Allow me to introduce her to you in a different way. Enjoy and as always be blessed!

Ms. Happiness

So this week we are looking at Ms. Happiness from Behind Those Eyes, Lisa Whittle's book. Orange items are direct quotes from Lisa's book.

What incredible timing. Today I put on my fake smile and went to work. No one had any idea my fibromyalgia was flaring up and I was in a lot of pain. No one knew that I was tired of dealing with my clients who tell blatant lies to get their way. I was Ms. Happiness today, as I am many other days.

May I share something? Pretending to be Ms. Happiness is not fun. Lisa said "someone can easily impersonate happiness without having it." Personally I think she's a cousin of Ms. Perfection! We pretend to be happy because we want everyone to think good things about us. We want to look like we "have it all together".

Lisa points out "Ms Happiness's A-plus efforts just aren't enough to produce the results she desperately desires." Ahem! Mrs. Whittle those are my toes you are stepping on.

Did my plastic grin make my pain go away? No. Did it make my fibromyalgia go into remission? Absolutely not. what about my client, were they any better. Umm, that would be a no as well. So all I did was waste energy trying to make other people think all was well. It wasn't.

So how do we get out of this fakeness, this happiness pretense? Get joy. I know, I know. You want to know how you can "get" joy. Lisa has the answer. "True joy comes from within when we are operating in our life in the way that pleases God."

So the very simplified steps are:

  • Make sure you have the Holy Spirit living inside you (if you are not sure about that visit here)
  • Find out what pleases God (i.e. read your Bible and pray)
  • Apply those principles in your life consistently

Pretty simple huh? Let me close with what I think is Lisa's most important sentence in this chapter.

"When we go to the real Source of joy, we find the answers we need to secure our contentment in life forever."

As always, be blessed and from now on, be joyful!

Be sure to stop by Lelia's for more great insight and to fellowship with other's doing this study with us.
